During 2006, Allen has been using all his engineering know-how and design skills to develop a race car which is pretty unique.
Having read on-line discussions about possible mid-motored 2 wheel drive cars, Allen decided to try his hand at producing his own!
Allen took his standard Losi XXX, and spent many hours beavering away to convert it to be mid-motored, rather than the conventional layout with the motor hanging out at the back.
The Losi XXX KB was born! (KB = Kitchen Built!)
Here's the Mark I. Unfortunately the aluminium 'Z' bracket was prone to bending under stress, so it was back to the drawing board.......
Officially this is the Mark III chassis, although the constant development has been hard to keep up with!! Clever use of 1/16th inch fibre glass has given the car strength but retained it's light weight.
The advantages of having the motor inside the car include greater stability, flatter jumping and increased traction in dry conditions. None of the major manufacturers currently produce a mid-motored car, so Allen's achievement is quite remarkable. The gearbox has been reversed, the motor runs the other way and the rear geometry is completely revised.
The car has aroused enormous interest, both on-line and in the flesh at race meetings, to such an extent that Allen even received an offer from someone wanted to market the conversion as a kit.
Several top name drivers showed great interest in the car, and a number of them gave it a blast around the Bury Metro circuit. Feedback was excellent which has given Allen the encouragement to continue developing the XXX KB. Watch this space.......
